How To Put On and Take Off A Herm Sprenger Prong Collar
Watch this video for clear instructions on how to put on and take off a Herm Sprenger Prong Collar. We also dive into common problems that may cause your prong collar not to work.
If you can't get the prong collar on your dog you should practice hooking and unhooking the links without trying to put it on your dog. Make it easy on yourself! Remember that if you are using a lot of strength you are probably doing it wrong.
If your prong collar is not working there are a couple of main causes. The first is that you attached to the wrong ring. If your collar has an O ring and a D ring you should always attach to the D ring.
Another potential issue is that the collar was twisted when you put it on. This is an easy fix and can be prevented by attaching a leash to the collar before you put it on. This puts weight on the D ring and helps keep the collar oriented properly.
Another common problem is when people take off one of the end links and put it on backwards. This will throw the whole collar out of whack and can be pretty annoying. We show you how to fix that issue in this video.

Should You Let Your Older Dog Correct Your Puppy?

If the puppy is bothering your older dog so much that a "correction" is needed, it should be you doing it and not the...

    I tried the Dogtra brand for my GSD and I couldn’t good contact with them. Maybe it’s bc of the comfort tips that make it hard idk. I’m going to try the brand you use and see if it makes better contact. It looks like it would cut through the fur better.

    • @SuburbanK9DogTraining

      Hi Oliver! I personally use a 3.0 for Mals because I like the strength it offers. Many people do use a 2.25 and like it, but I worry about a link bending if the dog is intense or drivey. I would avoid the 3.2 since it doesn’t tend to work as well and doesn’t add any advantage over the 3.0.

    My 2-year-old collie does therapy visits and is friendly. When she is in a stay and someone approaches to pet, she will get up, allow the pet to the head, and turn her body so the petting continues to her back. Is that a problem? Question about the food: is it acceptable to say "leave it" but move at a faster pace past the item on the ground?

    Littermate owner here; thank you so much for the video. I see that we should be doing all of the training separate and then together but how often should they spend together during the day. We are working on crating in different rooms but when they both get up and go for their separate walks, then together, is okay for them to spend the day together in the house as well or should we always keep them separate?

    • @SuburbanK9DogTraining
      @SuburbanK9DogTraining 3 дні тому

      That is a great question Mary! If you are crating them in separate rooms, training then together and separate and doing one on one socializing trips then you are off to a great start! I wouldn't worry about how much time they spend together during the day playing or laying around together. The hard work you are doing ensures they are able to function separately and no amount of play time during the day will ruin that. Please reach out with any additional questions!

      @SuburbanK9DogTraining 3 дні тому

      The collar riding high on the neck is ideal, but like you have noticed it rarely stays there. The main thing is to just fit the collar snugly so that it doesn't sit extremely low.

I also appreciate very much that you didn't start with a dog that you already had practice with and made edits if things didn't go as expected. I don't believe in the tap,tap,tap,tap, method. And I don't want to use the ecollar forever. Just for a month or two should do it. I've always trained my dogs without an ecollar in the past. He walks with me on leash kind of good. But he’s very skiddish, any loud noises he runs and tries to hide. I tried to get him as comfortable as I can around the noises but our neighbor has a bike and if he revs it rocky(our puppy) spikes and tries to run. Take it slow and use lots of treats the first couple sessions. Your goal won’t be to “train” her. Your goal will be to show her that the vibration is a good thing and means “come”. In the 1980s I saw a lot of people misusing e-collars. Then in the mid 1990s I saw several better collars on the market but was still hesitant to use them. Even today e collars are not my go to tool but they do have their place if used properly.

      Great question! I wouldn’t worry at all about which sex you get first. I would just work hard to find a puppy with the right temperament for you. If you get two I would definitely watch our full length Littermate videos. This can arise even if they are a few months apart. Luckily prevention is free and most of it is very fun!

    I am lucky my cats are also familiar with dogs, and if they run and one of my dogs gives chase, they stop literally stop. Takes the joy out of the chase for the dogs. It helps when teaching new dogs that I either adopt or are visiting while I am teaching the leave it.

    We came into a 4th dog recently and now all of ours race to get counter and even kids food as they’re walking. Can you train them one at a time or do you need to train all of them in a row? I’m concerned that working one at a time will be ineffective with a competitive atmosphere.

      Great question! With multi dog households we start with one dog at a time until they are doing well. Then we try two dogs at a time and then three etc. You will probably find one or two dogs will be a challenge and the rest will probably be pretty easy. Reach out with any questions once you get started!

      It sounds too good to be true, but go for long walks together. This helps build trust and reduce excitement. Those are the two things that cause the most fights. The third is guarding a resource. Walk for as long as you need to and then let them meet each other away from the house. If that goes well do some play sessions on neutral ground. After a few play sessions try again at the home but play close attention because your dog may guard her bed, her bowl, her toys etc. I hope this helps!!!

    They have 6-8 minutes? I think you're asking a bit much. I will tell you, tho, that the dog (@1 year old pittie/blue tick hound mix) that got dumped in our yard in April and we decided to keep (after pursuing all avenues to find owner and couldn't), and was not trained _at all_ has gone from running away like a crazy thing to sitting, staying, recognizing free, and coming that 80% of the time using his methods. Raven isn't perfect. Yet. We're just starting to work on heel. Sit, stay and come were more important as we live on a country highway. We'll continue to work on come, too.

      @SuburbanK9DogTraining Sorry, I just meant that the usual video is quite short, and you have to balance imparting information with producing the video. Showing a dog going from completely untrained to perfect canine citizen would have been time intensive and really not helped impart the information any better than using Wallen. As for the perfect home, we like to think so! Your training methods are simple and clear-cut, and they're not only working, but they're also helping us bond. She's still not quite sure we're her new people, and training has helped her feel, I think, more secure. She still plays the game, but we're working on it, and she's come a long way. So, thank you for your videos. They've been really good for both ends of the leash.

      Ah! That makes sense! We definitely struggle with the “ideal” video length. Too long and it gets boring and too short and people don’t get enough information from it. Our goal is to create a series for each command showing dogs at different training levels. That way everyone has access to a video that works for them. Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment and feel free to reach out with questions any time!!!

    5 minutes in and I already have a comment. My GSD/Husky mix (I am guessing no DNA and a shelter dog) has been at my retail job where he had 3 young kids petting and hugging him. (i told the children not all dogs like this and explained the fear of being trapped etc) but when I was going to hand a cig out my car window to a homeless man and he decided to reach in my car window across my body to get it he almost got his hand taken off. Now my guy gave a warning air bite right next to his wrist. Some dogs usually certain breeds that have that protection sort of built in to why they were bred have a good idea of what is friend or foe behavior.

    • @SuburbanK9DogTraining
      @SuburbanK9DogTraining 19 днів тому

      You can definitely use an e collar for reactivity, but we prefer to make a lot of progress on the heel command first with a traditional collar. Really focus on mastering the left and right turn. This ensures your dog truly knows heel before layering in the e collar. When people start the e collar too quickly it is sometimes used a little too heavily because the dog doesn’t know the expectations yet. If you need any guidance on the turns check out our video on Stopping Leash Pulling. Reach out with any questions!

    So, my husband and I just adopted 2 16 week old German Shepherd/great Pyrenees mixes. They were an accidental litter living on a farm. They were in very bad shape when we went to see them, underfed, malnourished one was blind in one eye from an infection that was never treated. So we chose to adopt both of them. I wasn’t aware of littermate syndrome and am beginning to feel panicked and concerned about raising the two of them together. I noticed you said that 16 weeks is the end of their formative socialization period. They do well with people and other dogs. However, they do not get along with our older cat. They bark at him incessantly, and if out of their crate, will attempt to chase him and pounce on him. is it too late to fix this? What would you recommend to socialize them with the cat in the way that is productive?

    • @SuburbanK9DogTraining
      @SuburbanK9DogTraining 22 дні тому

      Great questions Sara! Don't worry that they are already 16 weeks, you just have to play the cards you are dealt. Work really hard on socializing from this point forward and you can still raise well adjusted dogs. It might just take a little more work. At their age, barking at and chasing the cat is fairly common and probably isn't indicative of aggression. I would do a lot of leash training with the dogs and then use "heel" as a calming technique. Once they can heel perfectly you can practice heeling them in the house around the cat to teach them to be calm around it. Once that goes well you can practice your other commands around the cat. Here is a video on how to start the heel command, how to master the turns and how to stop leash pulling. Let us know what questions you have after watching it! ua-cam.com/video/DdeHrc4pCmA/v-deo.html

    We've a beagle mix (rescue from Tennessee) that is such an awesome dog, but she just does not do recall. She's only a year and half old and is pretty much trained up on everything, except following a recall command! This video is great, but she is not in any way treat motivated, she has a high chase play instinct (we learnt long ago not to chase her, but to wait patiently and positively reinforce when she does come), isn't hugely affectionate so petting doesn't reward her that much I feel, so when it comes to being outside, recall is a serious problem. Inside, she does fetch brilliantly. Outside she'll chase a ball, but then leaves it where it is. When she has escaped the house, she's gone for 2-3 hour sprees and it takes the whole street to catch her. Wanted to see what your thinking was! This video is great, but we've tried a lot of this and starting to think an e-collar is the only way to go at this stage...

      An e collar can be a great option! When it is done properly it is not stressful for the dog and is a fun process. Here are two videos that will show you everything you need to know about how to train your dog on one. The first video shows how to acclimate to vibration. The vibration is meant to be a good thing (we pair it with "come"). That being said, many dogs are nervous when they first feel the vibration. We generally use food during this process just to make sure the dog knows the vibration is a good thing. In the second video we show how to acclimate to the stim function. This is meant to be a correction for when the dog messes up. We don't use any treats in this video and rarely use them for this part of the process. Reach out with any questions after you check these out! ua-cam.com/video/1xnBM47shVA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/fNt0h6hiDQo/v-deo.html

    I requested two black mouth curs that where dumped in the landfill. They are a year old now. And I have not any littermate syndrome, but that might be because I also have a 6 year old Great Dane and a 7 year old Pit bull. So they come into a house with other older dogs.

      It sounds like your dogs were lucky to find a great home! I am glad you never experienced littermate syndrome with them. Having more dogs in the house can definitely help if the dogs spend a lot of time playing with a dog besides their littermate. Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment!
